India Approves Semiconductor Mission 2.0 A ₹1.27 Lakh Crore Push Toward a Self-Reliant Chip Industry

India has taken a major step toward becoming a global semiconductor manufacturing hub with the Union Cabinet’s approval of Semiconductor Mission 2.0, a ₹1.27 lakh crore initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s chip design, manufacturing, and supply chain ecosystem. The decision was announced by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as part of a broader package of Cabinet approvals worth ₹2.19 lakh crore.

Expanding India’s Semiconductor Vision

The new mission significantly builds upon the original India Semiconductor Mission, which had an allocation of ₹76,000 crore and supported the approval of 12 semiconductor manufacturing projects worth nearly ₹1.64 lakh crore. Many of these projects are being led by Tata Electronics and other strategic industry partners.

Semiconductor Mission 2.0 introduces six strategic pillars focused on developing India’s semiconductor ecosystem from chip design to manufacturing. For the first time, the scheme also extends financial incentives to suppliers of essential semiconductor raw materials, including specialty gases, minerals, chemicals, and other critical manufacturing components.x

According to the government, the initiative is expected to attract nearly ₹4 lakh crore in private investment while generating semiconductor production worth around ₹2 lakh crore, reinforcing India’s ambition to achieve long-term self-reliance in advanced electronics manufacturing.

Strengthening Electronics Manufacturing

Alongside the semiconductor initiative, the Cabinet approved the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme with an allocation of ₹62,500 crore to accelerate India’s growing electronics manufacturing industry.

Additional approvals included the National Investment Policy for Urea-2026 to reduce fertilizer imports, two major railway expansion projects, and large infrastructure developments in Varanasi, including elevated corridors designed to improve connectivity between the city’s airport, railway stations, and urban centers.

Why Semiconductor Mission 2.0 Matters

The announcement comes as countries worldwide continue investing heavily in domestic semiconductor production to reduce dependence on concentrated global supply chains. Rising demand for AI, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and cloud computing has made semiconductor manufacturing a strategic national priority.

By expanding incentives beyond fabrication facilities to include suppliers of raw materials and supporting industries, India is working to build a complete semiconductor value chain rather than relying solely on assembly operations.

For global technology companies, manufacturers, and investors, Semiconductor Mission 2.0 represents a strong signal that India is positioning itself as a long-term destination for semiconductor innovation, advanced manufacturing, and supply chain diversification.
