Taz Dunstan: Giving People the Knowledge, Support, and Confidence to Stand Up for Their Rights

“Justice should not become out of reach simply because legal help is too expensive.”

For many people, facing a legal matter without a lawyer can mean dealing with confusing procedures, complex paperwork, strict deadlines, and difficult decisions alone. Without the right guidance, even understanding where to begin can feel overwhelming.

Clear information, practical templates, administrative support, and advocacy can give people the knowledge and confidence to understand their options and represent themselves more effectively.

Taz Dunstan, Founder and CEO of Ponsonby Chambers, is helping people access justice when legal costs, complex court procedures, and lack of guidance make the system difficult to navigate. Through Ponsonby Chambers, she provides practical support, legal templates, administrative assistance, advocacy, and self-representation resources, while also helping clients manage the stress that comes with serious legal matters and court abuse, especially prevolent in the family court.

Her work has delivered measurable results, including successfully overturning a record 17.5 High Court cases in a single Court of Appeal decision, issued 14 February 2023 ([2023] NZCA 25) and supporting clients in matters involving child custody, family contact, and false charges.

Under her leadership, Ponsonby Chambers has grown into a wider access-to-justice initiative with advocates across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, USA, Canada, and Africa. The organization has helped four mothers regain custody, three men regain contact with their children, and eight individuals achieve the dismissal of false charges, while its’ reach has grown to more than 1.5 million people across her social media platforms alone.

Dunstan has also gained international recognition and became a finalist in six categories of the 2026 AusMumpreneur Awards with the winners due to be announced between 14-16 September 2026  highlighting the growing impact of her work across legal support, wellness, advocacy, and social enterprise.

From Personal Adversity to a Mission for Justice

Ponsonby Chambers was created out of necessity rather than through a planned business strategy. Before establishing it, Dunstan worked as an athlete and health and fitness professional, specialising in rehabilitation and personal transformations. In 2018, a traumatic experience led her into the roles of human rights and mental health advocacy. During one of the most difficult periods of her life, she realised there were very few resources that could support people dealing with severe trauma and court abuse while also helping them understand their legal options to be able to make informed decisions. This led her to create Ponsonby Chambers as a practical support system she refers to as “a legal life line” for people facing similar situations.

The organization has been built around a “Mental Health Hub” offering resources such as books, allied health support, creative art therapy, and self-care guidance. The aim is to help people manage stress, anxiety, grief, and overwhelming emotions before making important legal decisions. Once they are in a better state of mind, they can access practical and affordable resources to understand their rights, represent themselves in court, or work more effectively with legal counsel. Through this approach, Ponsonby Chambers seeks to make justice more affordable and accessible, regardless of a person’s financial or social circumstances.

Dunstan has published two best selling books:

  1. “The Gain Cycle” which was specifically designed to help people survive depression by focusing on self care staples to avoid adding to the suicide statistics of family court, and
  2. “The 30 day challenge” a book designed as a daily reminder to stay focused on goals with QR codes for instruction videos for each work.

Facing Strong Criticism and Intimidation

Dunstan faced strong criticism and intimidation while building a movement focused on protecting people from abuse and exploitation. As she fought for her own safety and that of her children, she says she uncovered serious concerns within New Zealand’s legal system, which strengthened her commitment to raising public awareness about corruption and systemic abuse. Ongoing threats also forced her to close her personal social media accounts and rebrand her work under the Ponsonby Chambers name, while taking steps to keep the organization’s online presence secure and provide anonymity to clients wanting to share their stories in a safe way.

These experiences also shaped her approach to communication and advocacy. Rather than allowing allegations and criticism to go unanswered or to gag her like so many other victims, she began carefully documenting facts, court submissions, and case information through LinkedIn articles to expose the systemic abuse and counter what she describes as “creative writing” of judges with matters of fact supported with evidence.

Her aim is to give the public access to information, encourage people to ask questions, and draw attention to concerns surrounding accountability and self-regulation within the legal system which equates to no regulation in practice.

Notable Milestones

In February 2023, Dunstan achieved a major breakthrough when the New Zealand Court of Appeal overturned 17.5 High Court cases involving Justice Jagose’s summary dismissals and remitted them to be heard in accordance with her rights to justice ([2023] NZCA 25). Dunstan now boasts over 30 personal court case wins on her own and nearly 50 more, assisting her clients secure wins in their cases across all levels of justice from tribunals up to the Highest Court in New Zealand and across Australia. This has made Dunstan recognised as the most successful self litigant in New Zealand by number of cases won. The results demonstrate what determined self-represented litigants can achieve when they conduct thorough research and present strong legal arguments.

Another significant milestone came on 1 September 2024, when the New Zealand Courts confirmed that self-represented litigants would be entitled to costs at a flat rate of $500 per day. Dunstan had strongly advocated for this change, arguing that denying self-represented people the same right to costs available to lawyers was unfair and amounted to an act of discrimination against peoples occupations and access to resources. She then filed a petition to parliament to expand the scope of prohibited grounds of discrimination under s21 of the Human Rights Act 1993 to include occupation to address this “oversight”. These milestones have strengthened her work to promote equal access to justice and raise public awareness for help and exposure of abuse of power that must be addressed for the protection and safety of those most vulnerable.

Giving Vulnerable People the Tools to Represent Themselves

Dunstan saw that many vulnerable people, including children and victims of abuse, were struggling to access justice because of high legal costs, complex court processes, and fear or intimidation. In response, she developed a practical, user friendly support system through Ponsonby Chambers, offering administrative assistance, legal templates, and step-by-step guidance to help people follow processes for best case outcomes and competently and confidently represent themselves in court.

Through this work, Dunstan has gained international recognition for the number of cases she has successfully taken through the New Zealand courts. As an Australian who has built a significant body of case law through her own legal matters, she considers this achievement an important part of her work to make justice more accessible by creating case law for other self litigants to rely on for their own success. She had 73 cases in the courts of New Zealand when an s166 restraining order was placed on her preventing these matters being heard. The courts alleged this was because she filed “meritless cases”, but her track record of successful litigation contradicts this. Not withstanding, with Judges refusing to grant Dunstans right to justice to proceed with her own cases, she has pursued business development avenues and expanded the location establishing in Australia in February 2025 to continue her case law creation across Western Australia, Northern Territory, New South Wales, Queensland and Australian Capitol Territory.

Holistic Support for Mind, Health, and Justice

Ponsonby Chambers provides a Mental Health Hub with practical self-care and wellness resources, including an art therapy course and programs such as the 21-Day Gain Cycle and 30-Day Challenge. These programs were developed from Dunstan’s experience in health, fitness, rehabilitation, and personal recovery, with the aim of helping people manage stress, build healthier routines, and improve their overall well-being and prevent further suicide statistics. Dunstan supports charities such as “Breast Cancer Foundation”, “Movember Foundation”, “Lifeline” shadow walk , “Brave Hearts” and “Liptember” pledging to donate $5 from a selected book for each cause during their fundraising month to be donated to the charity from Ponsonby Chambers.

Alongside these resources, Ponsonby Chambers provides administrative assistance and advocacy across courts, tribunals, and different levels of the justice system. The organization helps people understand their options, prepare their matters properly, and access the right resources so they can make informed decisions and pursue their cases with less stress, less harm caused, less financial strain and greater confidence, whether they are representing themselves or instructing legal counsel.

Creating a Support System Where Clients Know They Are Not Alone

Ponsonby Chambers starts its support with the Mental Health Hub, helping people manage stress and emotions before making important legal decisions. Clients first make contact by email, which helps the team understand their needs and connect them with the website for immediate access and then the right advocate based on their location, situation, personality, and experience. This helps clients feel supported, understand their options, and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

The organization puts people before profit and focuses on finding fair outcomes. Many clients come to Ponsonby Chambers after difficult experiences with lawyers, so rebuilding their trust is an important part of the work. The team helps clients feel that they have support and do not have to face the legal system alone.

Client Success Story

A client in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, reached out for help after her son had been kept in custody for 30 days without a conviction. With support from Ponsonby Chambers, she filed a writ of habeas corpus to seek his urgent release. Although the application was initially dismissed on what Dunstan says was an inaccurate legal basis [2025] NTSC 13, her son was released the next day.

The experience encouraged her to help Indigenous communities in northern Australia better understand and use court processes to seek fair and equal treatment. Her story shows how clear guidance and access to legal resources can help people take action during difficult situations and better understand their rights.

A Global Team United by Experience, Knowledge, and Access to Justice

Ponsonby Chambers builds its team around shared experience, practical knowledge, and a common commitment to making justice more accessible. Its advocates come from Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the USA, Canada, and Africa, with many having personal experience representing themselves in court. This allows them to understand the pressure and challenges clients face and provide practical guidance based on real experience.

The team encourages collaboration by sharing legal knowledge, case learnings, and useful information that can be difficult for people without legal experience to find. By learning from one another and keeping the focus on the client’s needs and the best way forward, the team continues to improve its approach while helping more people understand and navigate the justice system.

Using Technology to Make Legal Information Easier to Access

Technology is becoming an important part of how Ponsonby Chambers makes legal information easier to find, understand, and use. The organization has maintained control of its online platforms while testing and improving its processes, allowing it to build a reliable base before expanding further. As part of its next stage of growth, Ponsonby Chambers is preparing to introduce AI-powered chatbots that can respond to common questions and provide access to basic legal templates and resources for download on demand features.

This will give people a quicker way to find useful information without having to wait for assistance with routine enquiries. It can also help the team spend more time supporting clients with matters that require greater attention and understanding. By combining its existing resources with suitable technology, Ponsonby Chambers is creating a more accessible online support system while preparing the organization to reach and assist more people in the future.

Further, there is a growing uprising of outraged individuals armed with AI programs such as Grok, Claude, ChatGPT and other legal wizard apps, which is flooding the courts and tribunals without regulation and becoming overwhelming. While a useful starting point, this will require administrative assistance to tailor the information to court requirements to be effective and court compliant, and to avoid costs and fines for “hallucinated decisions” or made-up grounds that AI has a tendency to “play with” as part of its self-development function to continue to harvest data.

Global Recognition for Accessible Justice & Well-Being

Ponsonby Chambers has developed a strong and user-friendly framework that can be adapted to different legal systems around the world. Its approach brings together a Mental Health Hub and self-care resources with practical support for people who choose to represent themselves in legal matters. By helping people regain emotional balance before dealing with complex legal issues, the organization enables them to respond with greater clarity and confidence. This approach has helped Ponsonby Chambers gain international recognition for its work in making justice more accessible. The recognition received by Ponsonby Chambers reflects the growing reach and impact of this work across different areas.

It includes:

For Dunstan, one of her proudest personal achievements has been earning the belief and support of her children who understand what she is fighting for. Professionally, she takes pride in standing by her work despite ongoing efforts to challenge and discredit her. Dunstan has converted her trauma into triumph, creating a legacy that will long outlast her or any of her oppressors that countless victims can access as a source of hope to keep going.

Its growing recognition is further reflected in Dunstan being named a finalist in six categories of the 2026 AusMumpreneur Award, out of over 2000 entrants:

Author, Social Enterprise, Wellness Business, Legal, One to Watch, and Business Evolution/Pivot.

Help Others Without Expecting Anything In Return

Dunstan’s leadership philosophy is centered on having a purpose greater than oneself and helping others without expecting anything in return. She believes that when a person has the ability to help, they should. Over the years, her experiences have strengthened her commitment to speaking up about issues that need public attention, for herself and for people who may be afraid to speak for themselves. She values integrity, determination, adaptability, and courage, believing that true strength comes from standing by one’s principles, learning from difficult situations, and continuing to move forward when change is needed converting trauma into triumph.

Future Where Justice Is Within Everyone’s Reach

Ponsonby Chambers aims to become a trusted and independent resource for people facing the justice system around the world. Its long-term vision is to create a future where access to justice does not depend on a person’s income or ability to afford a lawyer. The organization wants people to have access to clear information, practical guidance, useful legal resources, and support that can help them understand their options and take the right steps for their situation.

As it grows, Dunstan plans to continue improving its resources, sharing knowledge, and building a support system that can reach people across different countries and legal systems. Its work is focused on reducing the fear and confusion that often surround legal matters and helping people feel better prepared to speak for themselves. By continuing to share practical information and lessons from real experiences, the organization hopes to give people greater confidence to protect their rights, make informed decisions, and seek a fair outcome without feeling that justice is beyond their reach.

Message for Aspring Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders

Dustan says,

“You have to lead with heart and be unwavering in your values, morals and ethics. Never put profit ahead of people or your integrity.

Money can be made- you can not buy back trust or credibility so be wise about the message you want the world to see through your actions.

You only lose when you quit- so that can not be an option when you have a cause greater than yourself. The fight is long, pace to last the distance.”
